How to save money at John Lewis
Separate My John Lewis from the Partnership Credit Card
This is the most persistent point of confusion on John Lewis pages — including on John Lewis’s own. My John Lewis is a free loyalty scheme that earns no points. Its value comes through personalised monthly offers, early sale access, member-only pricing on selected products and the BeautyCycle and FashionCycle recycling incentives. The John Lewis Partnership Credit Card is a separate product entirely — a no-annual-fee credit card that earns points. They work alongside each other but are not the same thing, and you don’t need the credit card to benefit from My John Lewis.
Join My John Lewis for member pricing and recycling incentives
My John Lewis is free to join and requires no spending to maintain. The most tangible benefits are member-only product pricing — recent examples include £100 off selected Samsung tablets, 10% off AEG appliances and £319 off Google Pixel phones — and access to early sale dates before general release. The two recycling programmes add modest but genuine value: BeautyCycle gives you £5 off beauty purchases over £50 when you bring in five empty beauty containers in store; FashionCycle gives you £5 off fashion or homeware orders over £20 when you donate five clothing items. Neither is transformative, but both reward purchases you’d be making anyway.
Book a Home Design appointment for 5-10% off homeware
My John Lewis members who book an in-store or virtual Home Design Service appointment unlock a discount on selected homeware and bedroom purchases — 5% off when spending £1,500 or more, rising to 10% on £3,000 or more. If you’re furnishing a room or doing a significant homeware refresh, this is worth knowing before you spend. The appointment is free to book and can be done online.
Use the Never Knowingly Undersold price match
John Lewis reinstated its Never Knowingly Undersold price match in September 2024 after a two-year absence, this time using AI to check prices daily against 25 major retailers including Amazon (on technology), AO.com, Argos, ASOS, Boots, Currys, M&S, Next and Richer Sounds. If you find an identical in-stock product cheaper at one of those retailers within 7 days of your John Lewis purchase, you can claim the difference via the price match form on johnlewis.com. The same 7-day window applies if John Lewis drops its own price after you’ve bought. One exclusion worth noting: a competitor’s lower price must be their standard retail price — voucher codes, loyalty scheme pricing and clearance discounts at competitors don’t qualify.
Try haggling in store
MoneySavingExpert’s polling of over 1,400 readers found that John Lewis shoppers had a 72% success rate when haggling — one of the highest of any major UK retailer. It’s particularly worth trying on big-ticket items like televisions, appliances or furniture, where a polite conversation with a Partner about matching a competitor price or improving the terms can often yield results.
Watch for free gifts with beauty purchases
John Lewis runs regular spend-threshold gift promotions in its beauty department — free gift sets from brands including Clarins, Jo Malone and Charlotte Tilbury when you spend over a qualifying amount. These come and go throughout the year and are particularly prominent around gifting occasions. They’re not shown on voucher sites — checking the John Lewis website directly before a beauty purchase is the most reliable way to catch them.
Consider the Partnership Credit Card for regular shoppers
If you shop regularly at John Lewis or Waitrose, the Partnership Credit Card earns 5 points per £4 spent at both retailers, plus 1 point per £4 everywhere else. Every 500 points converts to a £5 voucher, redeemed automatically three times a year in February, June and October. There’s no annual fee. One thing to flag from April 2026: the earn rate at David Clulow Opticians (previously John Lewis Opticians, rebranded April 2026) dropped from 5 points per £4 to 1 point per £10 — worth knowing if you use John Lewis for eyewear. As with any credit card, it’s only worth using if you clear the balance in full each month.
Why shop with John Lewis?
Founded in 1864 and the UK’s largest employee-owned retailer, John Lewis is a department store that spans fashion, electricals, homeware, beauty, furniture and nursery under one roof. A few things make it genuinely distinctive as a place to shop.
A 2-year guarantee on all electricals as standard. Every electrical product sold at John Lewis comes with a minimum 2-year guarantee — longer than the statutory minimum and better than most competitors. This applies whether you’re buying a laptop, a camera or a kitchen appliance, and holds regardless of the brand’s own warranty terms.
The breadth of what’s available in one place. John Lewis stocks Apple, Samsung, Sony, Dyson, KitchenAid, Le Creuset and hundreds of other premium brands alongside its own COLLECTION range. The combination of branded goods and own-label, across categories from fashion to home tech, makes it a practical one-stop for considered purchases.
John Lewis Opticians — now David Clulow Opticians. From April 2026, John Lewis Opticians rebranded as David Clulow Opticians across its in-store branches. My John Lewis members continue to receive 20% off glasses and sunglasses when buying a complete pair, alongside a complimentary eye test when booking an appointment.
In-store expertise matters here more than at most retailers. John Lewis staff — called Partners because they’re employee-owners — are trained across their departments in a way that differs from general retail. For categories like audio equipment, cameras or nursery products, the ability to get detailed advice from someone with department knowledge is a genuine advantage over buying direct from a brand or a marketplace.
The app adds real utility beyond shopping. The John Lewis app includes an AI room visualiser for furniture (see how a sofa or wardrobe looks in your actual room before buying) and an in-store stock checker that lets you confirm availability before making a trip. These are practical features that reduce purchase risk, particularly on big furniture buys.
