- Confirm the discount is reflected in your total before completing the booking.
Note: If the code field isn't appearing, check that you've selected the Flexi rate rather than a prepaid option.
How to Save at SIXT
Understand the Flexi vs prepaid trade-off before you book
This is the thing most people don’t realise about SIXT pricing, and it affects everything else on this page. SIXT offers two core rate types: Flexi (pay on arrival) and Prepaid (pay now). Prepaid is generally cheaper, often up to 15% less than the equivalent Flexi rate, but it comes with restrictions: no free cancellation (unless you cancel within 24 hours of booking with pickup 48+ hours away), and driver details are fixed at the time of booking.
The important catch: discount codes only apply to Flexi bookings, not prepaid. So if you have a code, you’re choosing between the flexibility and discount of a Flexi booking, versus the lower base rate of prepaid without a code. On a short rental where the prepaid saving is small, a decent code on Flexi may come out ahead. On a longer rental, prepaid’s lower daily rate often wins even without a code. It’s worth doing the quick maths before you commit to either route.
Book as far ahead as possible
SIXT’s advance booking discount rewards early planners. Booking at least 14 days ahead can take up to 20-25% off the standard rate, and the saving is built into the displayed price rather than applied via a code. If your trip dates are fixed, which is often for holidays, a move or an airport run, locking the booking in early is one of the most reliable ways to reduce the cost.
Join SIXT ONE before your next rental
SIXT ONE is SIXT’s loyalty programme, and it’s free to join. From the moment you sign up, you get access to member-only rates at Silver tier. As you rent more (Gold from your 5th rental in 12 months, Platinum from your 10th), the discounts increase — up to 20% off at Diamond tier — and additional perks kick in, including counter skip at participating locations, free one-category upgrades, and bonus point multipliers. Points earned on qualifying rentals can be redeemed against future bookings.
One genuinely useful feature: if you already have status with another car hire company, such as Hertz Gold, Avis Preferred, Europcar Discoverer, SIXT will match it. You can switch to the equivalent SIXT ONE tier immediately without needing to re-earn it from scratch.
Check your eligibility discounts first
Before searching for a promo code, run through whether you qualify for a standing discount. Students and under-25s get up to 15% off via Student Beans. NHS staff, teachers, police, fire service, and military personnel get up to 15% off through the key worker discount page. These discounts apply automatically when you verify your status at checkout, and they can represent a more reliable saving than a promo code that may or may not be active at the time you’re booking.
Think carefully before adding Sixt’s insurance at checkout
Every UK SIXT booking already includes Third Party Liability and a Loss Damage Waiver. The optional extras — CDW with £0 excess, tyre and windscreen protection — reduce your financial exposure if something goes wrong, and they’re worth having. But before you add them at checkout, spend two minutes checking your own car insurance policy and your credit card terms. Some comprehensive car insurance policies extend to hire vehicles, and some credit cards include rental car protection as a cardholder benefit. If you’re already covered, you could avoid a daily fee that compounds over multi-day rentals.
Consider SIXT+ if you need a car for weeks rather than days
If you’re going through a period where you need a car for a month or more — a relocation, a gap between vehicles, an extended work project — SIXT+ is worth pricing up against a short-term rental. The monthly subscription includes maintenance, tax, registration, and liability insurance in one fixed price, with monthly cancellation after the first 30 days. Repeated short-term rentals at daily rates can add up faster than a subscription over the same period, and SIXT+ removes the logistical hassle of booking week by week.
Why We Rate SIXT
Car hire is a category where it’s easy to feel like you’ve been caught out. SIXT doesn’t completely avoid that risk — insurance upsells and fuel policies are universal — but a few things make it stand out.
The fleet is genuinely better than most competitors. Where Europcar and Enterprise tend to lean towards functional mid-range cars, SIXT makes a point of stocking premium makes. BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and Land Rover models appearing as standard options rather than exotic upgrades is a real difference, particularly on longer trips where the quality of the drive matters.
The Flexi rate with free cancellation is properly flexible. Free cancellation right up until pickup, with no fees, is not a standard industry offering. Many rental companies charge cancellation fees or insist on notice periods. The SIXT Flexi rate gives you the ability to book with intent and cancel with no penalty if plans change, which for leisure travellers booking months ahead is a meaningful reassurance.
SIXT ONE’s status match is an underrated benefit. Most loyalty programmes make you start from scratch, which is a real deterrent to switching. Sixt’s ability to match your existing status with Hertz, Avis, Europcar, or Enterprise means that if you’ve built up tier status elsewhere, you don’t lose it by trying SIXT. For frequent renters, that removes the main friction point of giving a new provider a proper try.
SIXT+ fills a genuine gap in the market. There’s an awkward middle ground between short-term hire and a full lease — the person who needs a car for two or three months but doesn’t want the commitment or upfront cost of a lease. SIXT+ is one of very few mainstream options that addresses this directly, with monthly cancellation and an all-in price that includes the things that catch people out on standard rentals.
